Scuba diving is a thrilling experience to discover the world beneath the sea, particularly in a place as diverse and colourful as Dubai. As a beginner or experienced diver, it is important to practice safety both under and above water. At Okay Dive, an authorized PADI dive centre in Dubai, we not only pay attention to providing you with the best diving experience but also with post-dive safety. Below are some important things that you should never do after scuba diving.
Flying shortly after diving can greatly raise your chances of developing decompression sickness (DCS), or "the bends." A plane's lower air pressure can make the nitrogen bubbles in your bloodstream expand. It is safest to wait at least 18–24 hours from your previous dive before flying.
Your body needs time to recover after a dive. Engaging in activities like intense workouts, running, or lifting heavy objects can strain your system and may lead to fatigue or increase the risk of DCS. Rest and rehydrate instead.
Although it might be tempting to celebrate your dive with a drink, alcohol can dehydrate your body and mask symptoms of decompression sickness. It's wise to wait a few hours and ensure you're fully hydrated before enjoying any alcoholic beverages.
Taking a hot shower or bath immediately after scuba diving may seem relaxing, but the heat can cause blood vessels to dilate, potentially affecting the process of nitrogen off-gassing. A warm shower is fine, but extremely hot water should be avoided.
Driving to mountainous areas or elevated locations after diving can have similar effects to flying. The pressure change at high altitudes can increase the risk of decompression sickness. If you’re planning to explore beyond Dubai’s coast, wait for the recommended surface interval first.
Fatigue, joint pain, or dizziness after a dive may seem minor but could indicate early signs of decompression sickness. Always report symptoms to a dive professional and seek medical attention if anything feels off.
Diving is not just about what you do underwater — it’s also about how you take care of yourself afterwards. At Okay Dive, a trusted PADI centre for scuba diving in Dubai, we ensure that our divers are educated about both pre- and post-dive best practices. Follow these simple tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable diving experience.
